Industry Involvement

Professional Associations and Standards

Scroll

First, service in development of industry standards and regs ideally advances and improves outcomes for all professionals and for the general public. It is the best way to give back.

Also: Industry Involvement both sets you apart and gives you an edge. It isn’t a secret sauce, and in fact, it is investment of a lot of work over significant time. When trying to win with large challenges (like disinfecting Allegiant Stadium above), or being out front on emerging markets (like indoor ag/legalized cannabis, at right), there is nothing stronger and more persuasive than service developing standards and regulations.

Industry Involvement brings the company into the best possible networking situations because the heated arguments in conference and zoom-rooms are among the industry leaders, and those that desire to give back. The respect and friendship forged in that environment is irreplaceable.

Industry-work maximizes communication skills

To make a contribution, one has to excel at written and spoken interaction. I never could have guessed how effectively I could leverage skills from my Political Science degree (Boston College ‘92), as well as so much experience being effective in front of intimidating groups thanks to theater and musical performance.

A project example:

Allegiant Stadium and the NFL Las Vegas Raiders faced numerous challenges to stay operational during the pandemic, including surface disinfection.  They were pitched on tech and chemistry that promised outlandish performance.  Another choice could have been to just continue with basic bathroom disinfectant that lacked chemistry and approved labeling for the demands of epidemic/pandemic.  I spent the time researching their needs, which for their dynamics are considerable (NFL surface, 71,000 seats, NCAA use, almost 5 major events per month).  We also analyzed promptly all other sanitization options brought to them, and our feedback was detailed and honest. This created trust and opportunity to be the disinfectant  chemistry of choice during the pandemic.  Then, we went farther and brought in a major supplier of airless spray equipment, and developed a “spider” - an unpredecented spray rig for the seating bowl that could support eight applicators.  We didn’t have to support beyond the sale, but I was able to build trust with the client.  From this relationship would come more opportunity in NFL, NHL, baseball, and dozens of large public spaces.
